One of the most useful tools in an offensive toolbox is the deep ball.  Deep passes stretch the field and discourage defenses from sending defensive pressure when there is a ton of field to cover. If you have the right personnel, use this tip from legacy member "MaddenBowl62" that illustrates a technique against any defender caught in a speed mismatch or out of position to pick up chunks of yards through the air.

This technique works against opponents that pressure from the edges but have slow cornerbacks.   The effect is especially effective if your team has a quarterback with high throwing power (THP) and a tall wide receiver with a high speed (SPD) rating.

First, make sure you are in a pre-snap situation that fits throwing a deep pass.  If there isn't enough room, your receiver may not have enough distance to allow his speed to create separation.  You will need ample field to allow your receiver to run at least 40 yards downfield before making the catch.  This is not recommended when inside your opponent's 35 yard line.

Next, be aware of where the ball is spotted between the hash marks.  This technique works best when the pass is thrown toward the wide side of the field.  Your receiver will have more room to maneuver for the catch before reaching the sideline. It may be necessary to throw away from a safety in the middle of the field.

Next, setup your protection to ensure you have the time to throw the ball.  You will need enough time to make a 7 step drop and step up into the pocket.  Hot route any backs or tight ends to block in order to buy the time you need to get the ball away.  Be particularly aware of middle pressure and slide the line accordingly.

Now that the pre-snap preparations are made, it's time to beat the defense deep.  Send your fastest WR on a streak or a fade.  At the snap, take a 7-step drop.  On your 7th step, climb up into the pocket 1 to 2 steps to escape edge pressure and buy extra time for receivers to get free.  Hold down the L1/LB button and tap the receiver's icon while holding the left stick up to throw the ball as far ahead of the receiver with as much arc as possible.

Immediately after the pass is thrown, take control of your receiver using the O/B button then sprint to the catch target using the R2/RT button.  Just before arriving at the catch target, hit the catch button - either AGGRESSIVE CATCH button (Triangle/Y), RUN AFTER CATCH button (Square/X), or the POSSESSION CATCH button (X/A).
